Automate your Stripe bookkeeping in e-conomic in 5 minutes
Automating your Stripe bookkeeping in e-conomic sounds like the kind of project you keep putting off. It isn't. With BookSyncer the whole setup takes about five minutes, and this tutorial walks through every step — plus exactly what access you're granting, because that part matters.
What you'll need
- A Stripe account that's taking payments.
- An e-conomic agreement you can authorize apps on.
- About five minutes.
No developer, no API keys to copy, no webhook URLs to paste.
Step 1 — Create your BookSyncer account
Sign up at app.booksyncer.com. You start on the free plan, which syncs up to 25 events a month — enough to run the whole flow end to end before you decide to upgrade.
Step 2 — Connect Stripe (read-only)
Click Connect Stripe and authorize through Stripe Connect. This is the step people worry about, so let's be precise about what BookSyncer can and can't do:
- Access is read-only — enough to see your invoices, charges, refunds and payouts, and nothing that can move money or change your Stripe settings.
- Events arrive on a single secure platform webhook, so there's no webhook URL to configure and no signing secret to paste.
- You can revoke access from Stripe at any time.
Step 3 — Connect e-conomic
Click Connect e-conomic. You'll be sent to e-conomic's official grant screen, where you approve BookSyncer for your agreement. e-conomic hands back an agreement grant token, which is encrypted at rest and used together with our own app secret for every API call. We never see your e-conomic username or password.
Step 4 — Pick your accounts
BookSyncer reads your e-conomic agreement and shows live dropdowns so you can map the journal, debtor account, Stripe clearing account, fee account, FX gain/loss accounts and bank account. If you want, you can also set customer group, payment terms, invoice layout, and product mappings here.
Step 5 — Review VAT and go live
BookSyncer proposes VAT zones and codes based on your setup. Review them, then run a test on your last invoice — a dry-run preview that shows exactly what would be booked without touching your ledger. When it looks right, enable the sync. You can also set a historical start date to catch up past invoices, and choose auto-book or draft-only.
The security story, in plain terms
Because BookSyncer sits between your payment data and your accounting system, it's worth being clear about how it's built:
- Read-only Stripe access via Stripe Connect — we can read, never move or modify.
- Encrypted e-conomic grant tokens, stored encrypted at rest; no passwords, ever.
- We don't store your customers' data as a product feature — BookSyncer is a relay. Once an event is booked successfully, the raw customer payload is purged and only a non-personal audit trail (types, statuses, external references) is kept.
- EU-hosted, encrypted in transit and at rest.

What happens after you switch it on
From that point, every Stripe event is booked in e-conomic the moment it happens — invoices, payments, fees, FX differences, refunds and payouts. Each event has a drill-down showing the exact actions BookSyncer took, with deep links to the resulting invoice or voucher. If a sync ever fails, it's retried automatically and, if it still can't complete, surfaced with the error and a one-click retry. Nothing is silently dropped.
